Building An Energi Economy on Biodiesel


This journal is a journal that was written by Jennifer Weeks who is a Massachusetts writer specializing in energy and environmental issues. This journal is based on book tittles “Biodiesel: Growing a New Energy Economy” written by Greg Pahl which was published by Chelsea Green.

Today, environmental issues become a most frequently discussed. The environmental issues such as CO2 emission, greenhouse effect, and climate change. Those issues are inseparable with energy resources or fuel such as diesel. For answer that’s all issues, scientists think what the ways and one of the ways that they are thought is to produce biodiesel to change petroleum diesel or to minimize the use of petroleum diesel, as a part of global clean energy demand.
The main component of biodiesel is ester which is a compound formed by reaction between an alcohol and an acid. Biodiesel can be produce from oil palm, coconuts, rapeseeds (canola), sun flower, mustard, soybeans, animal fat, and used frying oil. Rapeseeds is a most usefully raw for making biodiesel, secondly there is sun flower, and then, the raw which have more process to make biodiesel is used frying coconut oil that has any impurities that remain after using it for cooking. 
   
The reasons why we sure that biodiesel can change petroleum diesel or can reduce the used of petroleum diesel are biodiesel is environmental positive, efficient performance, and industrial-scale production.

Environmental Positive

From environmental point of view, biodiesel is preferable than petroleum diesel. It because biodiesel reduces greenhouse emission, as a statement from National Renewable Energy Laboratory who estimated that biodiesel produces 78 percents less carbon dioxide than petroleum diesel, and also a statement from National Commission on Energy Policy who stated that if biodiesel is produced from agricultural crops or wastes, it has the potential to achieve near-zero net carbon emissions. Biodiesel also degrades four times faster than petroleum diesel, and produce lower level of wastewater and hazardous solid wastes than petroleum diesel.

Efficient performance

Some characteristics of biodiesel that makes it more preferable than petroleum diesel are biodiesel has better ignition, has lubricant characteristic, and more efficiently. With those characteristics we can reduce maintenance activities such as replacing of fuel pump and oil changes. Replacing fuel pump caused by a bad ignition and as a statement above that biodiesel is better ignition and burns more cleanly than petroleum, so that, it can reduce maintenance costs. Oil changes will reduce also because the lubricant property of biodiesel which can lubricates more than petroleum diesel.
    
Industrial-scale production

Biodiesel also can produce in industrial-scale. It provided that Germany can produce till 185 millions gallons of biodiesel, and the largest European plant, located in France, has annual production as 70 million gallons.

In the short, I conclude that biodiesel can be a solution for answering environmental issues, although we can not replace 100 percent petroleum diesel. With consume less petroleum diesel we also reduce air emission or carbon dioxide emission, and reduce also the greenhouse effect and delay the climate change. With biodiesel also we can save our money for maintenance because biodiesel has better ignition and more lubricant. And biodiesel also will become a big industry area. Because of those all reasons, biodiesel must be preferable than petroleum diesel.
